Riga, 31 March 2015. – On 31 March, an informal meeting of Directors General responsible for Cohesion Policy took place in Riga under the Latvian Presidency. During the meeting experts discussed the most important pre-conditions for achieving the Cohesion Policy goals, in particular, enhanced use of financial instruments and the building of administrative capacity.
Brussels, 31 March 2015. – On Monday, 30 March, in Brussels Latvian Minister for Finance Janis Reirs as a minister of the presiding country represented the Council of the European Union for the first time during the Latvian Presidency leading the political trialogue on the EU budget between the Council of the EU, the European Commission (EC) and the European Parliament (EP).
Riga, 30 March 2015. – On 30-31 March, within the framework of Latvian Presidency, an informal meeting of Directors General responsible for Cohesion Policy will take place in Riga. Participants of the meeting will discuss the use of financial instruments in Cohesion Policy, as well as the building of administrative capacity in the planning, implementation and monitoring of the European Union funds.
On Friday, March 27, Finance Minister Janis Reirs met French Finance Minister Michel Sapin. Both ministers talked about such topics as growth promotion measures in Europe, fight against the tax optimization and financing of terrorism, as well as the situation in the euro area and negotiations with Greece.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) is establishing a new EUR 200 million loan facility for Latvia to support investments in energy, sustainable transport infrastructure and other fields including for the first time also in rural development. The loan agreement, signed today, March 17, by EIB Vice-President Pim van Ballekom and Minister of Finance of Latvia Janis Reirs, will help Latvia to successfully absorb EU structural funds over the period 2014–2020.
Brussels, March 10, 2015. – On Tuesday, March 10, already the third meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) was held under the Latvian Presidency and chaired by Finance Minister Janis Reirs. During the meeting, an overall agreement was achieved on the proposed regulation on the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) or EFSI regulation.
Brussels, March 9, 2015. – On Monday, March 9, Finance Minister Janis Reirs with a speech opened the first European Financial Week. The aim of the event is to promote wholesome financial education in schools across Europe.
London, February 19, 2015. – On Thursday, February 19, in London Finance Minister Janis Reirs opened a conference “Growth and long term financing of the European economy” about the necessity to restore sustainable growth and profitability of European businesses. In his speech, the Minister emphasized the most important pre-conditions for EU economic growth and the most significant activities to be carried out in this respect by the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
On 17 February, Latvian Finance Minister Jānis Reirs chaired the Meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council where Ministers debated the proposal of establishing European fund for strategic investments, growth prospects and adopted EU budget guidelines for 2016.
Brussels, February 16, 2015 – On Monday, February 16, Finance Minister Janis Reirs led the macro-economic dialogue at political level in Brussels. At the meeting, the Minister noted that the year 2015 was the first year after the crisis when economic growth was forecasted in all European Union (EU) Member States. However, there are still risks that must be eliminated to speed up the growth.
