Finance Minister Janis Reirs highly appreciates the cooperation with France in the sectors of economy and culture 31/01/2018

On Friday, March 27, Finance Minister Janis Reirs met French Finance Minister Michel Sapin. Both ministers talked about such topics as growth promotion measures in Europe, fight against the tax optimization and financing of terrorism, as well as the situation in the euro area and negotiations with Greece.

Attraction of investments to the European economy is very important, therefore both ministers talked about further intensive work at the implementation of the so-called Juncker’s Investment Plan. Finance Minister Janis Reirs emphasized achievements of the Presidency and indicated: “In a very short period of time we have managed from the initial proposal for the regulation to develop a quality, comprehensive and transparent proposal for the draft Regulation on the European Fund for Strategic Investments and to achieve a clear compromise. We have achieved that it is supported and evaluated by all European Union Member States. The next step is launching negotiations with the European Parliament to achieve political agreement and ensure that the fund is operable as soon as possible.”

Both ministers paid particular attention to the discussions about the Greece economic issues. Both countries are of similar opinion – the Greek government should fulfil its previous liabilities and introduce immediately serious measures – structural reforms to stabilize its national economy. Only through the implementation of necessary reforms euro area finance ministers will be ready to support provision of a loan to Greece.

Both ministers paid particular attention to the topical issue, which became even more topical after the terrorist attack in Paris – joint fight against the financing of terrorism. As Janis Reirs emphasized, the Latvian Presidency would do its utmost so that we move fast from general declarations to particular decisions.

Another important issue in the EU is the fight against tax evasion and aggressive tax planning at the global and EU level. Speaking about this issue Janis Reirs informed his French colleague that the Presidency has already prepared all necessary strategic guidelines to make the fight against the tax optimization across Europe more intensive.

As Janis Reirs noted during the meeting, it is planned to get back to many of these issues in April, when in Riga an informal ECOFIN meeting will be held, as well as in following ECOFIN meetings.

In the end of the meeting Janis Reirs thank French Finance Minister Michel Sapin for the successful cooperation and expressed a hope that economic and cultural relations between both countries will be strengthened.
